Biochemical Journal celebrate Darwin
The Biochemical Journal publishes the first review in an exciting series of reviews to mark the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin in 2009.
Take a look at Darwin, Dover, "Intelligent Design" and textbooks by Kevin Padian and Nicholas Matzke, which deals with the evolution-versus-creationism controversy in American jurisprudence. Other reviews in the series will cover the evolution of protein phosphatases in plants and animals by Greg Moorhead and colleagues, insulin/IGF-like signalling and aging by Susan Broughton and Linda Partridge, the evolution of the protein world by Gustavo Caetano-Anolles and colleagues, and superfamilies, divergence and domains in protein evolution by Cyrus Chothia and Julian Gough

Portland Press Journals compliant with FP7 Pilot
All journals published by Portland Press are now fully compliant with the Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7) Pilot.
- Biochemical Journal, Clinical Science, Bioscience Reports, Biology of the Cell, Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry and Biochemical Society Transactions.
The EU Commission requires articles resulting from research funded by FP7 to be deposited in the institutional repository of the research institute of which they are affiliated. Researchers are permitted to deposit the Accepted Manuscript 6 months after publication. However, researchers wishing to deposit the Version of Record must take the Opt2Pay option.

Cell Signalling Biology - New additions now live!
Cell Signalling Biology now includes the following new additions from Mike Berridge:
- A uniquely comprehensive list and descriptions of smooth-muscle cell types
- Stem cells
- Skin, with descriptions of cells and glands
- Coverage of more diseases (phenotypic and genotypic)
- Updated information on channels and co-transporters
- Notch signalling pathway
- Expanded coverage of angiogenesis
- Control of food intake and body weight
-
- plus more animated schemes...
Cell Signalling Biology provides researchers, teachers and students alike with an essential online resource describing the biology of cell signalling. It is published using EESI-View, the innovative and highly acclaimed online format first developed by Portland Press for the Biochemical Journal.
A sample module and synopses is freely available at www.cellsignallingbiology.org
What the experts say:
'A fantastic resource for educators and researchers alike, and for anyone interested in the basics and details of cell signalling pathways. The diagrams are particularly useful as teaching tools, I highly recommend this to anyone engaged in signalling research'.
Alex Toker, Harvard Medical School, Boston

Portland Press to publish a new Open Access journal
American Society for Neurochemistry chooses Portland Press Limited to publish its new journal ASN NEURO.
ASN NEURO will be launched in 2009 as an Open Access journal to further the Society's mission to advance, promote, support, encourage and facilitate communication among investigators in the cellular and molecular neuroscience community.
ASN have appointed a distinguished member of the international neuroscience community as the first Editor-in-Chief: Professor Anthony T. Campagnoni, who holds the Coates Chair in Neuroscience, Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behaviour, UCLA, has agreed to provide the editorial leadership for this exciting new addition to scholarly publishing.
ASN NEURO will develop a range of specific knowledge environments to represent the broader scope and aims of the ASN, namely: Cell, Molecular and Developmental Neurobiology; Cell Signalling and Neurophysiology: Nervous System Metabolism; Architecture of the Nervous System; Neurodegeneration and Neuroprotection; Biology of Glia; Brain Injury and Repair; Inflammation and Immune Response in the Nervous System.
"We look forward to developing a successful publishing partnership with the ASN and Professor Campagnoni, and are delighted that ASN have selected Portland Press to help them to realise their vision for ASN NEURO" said Rhonda Oliver, Managing Director of Portland Press Limited.
"The ASN Officers and Council are excited by the innovative online open access formats that Portland Press is developing for ASN NEURO. We are confident that with Professor Campagnoni's leadership, ASN NEURO will become a strong new voice, representing the traditional themes of our Society while offering novel possibilities for rapid, open access publication of complex data in multiple, media formats" said Monica Carson, President of ASN.
"I am delighted to be asked by the ASN to serve as the first Editor-in-Chief of ASN NEURO. This new online journal will present many advantages to authors: very rapid publication, free colour figures, personal copyright of papers, and fewer constraints than print journals in the way information is presented. I look forward to the challenges of launching this new journal devoted to publishing high-quality manuscripts reporting important advances in all areas of Neuroscience" said Professor Anthony Campagnoni

New Volume of Biochemical Society Symposia available
Portland Press are pleased to announce the online publication of:
- Biochemical Society Annual Symposium No. 75
- Structure and Function in Cell Adhesion
- Edited by David Garrod
-
- ISBN: 9781855781726
Structure and Function in Cell Adhesion is a collection of reviews based on the presentations by invited speakers at the Biochemical Society's Annual Symposium which was held in Manchester on 3-5 December 2007. The meeting brought together many of the world's leading contributors to this important research field to exploring how modern techniques in structural and cell biology have furthered our understanding of the mechanism and dynamics of cell adhesion and its contribution to cell
signalling.
The volume covers a wide range of aspects of adhesion, including cadherins, adherens junctions and desmosomes, integrins and focal contacts, receptor tyrosine phosphatases, Notch and Slit-Robo, signalling, adhesive binding to collagen and fibrillin and complex adhesive mechanisms involved in leucocyte migration and malaria. It also embraces biochemical, biophysical, structural, electron microscopical and cell biological techniques, showing how these combine to answer major questions in adhesion.
You can subscribe online now at http://symposia.biochemistry.org features include online access to all volumes published since 1998 and use of PDFs in course packs, e-reserves and VLEs permitted. Also available as part of a subscription to Biochemical Society Transactions (www.biochemsoctrans.org)

2008 Impact Factors Announced
Portland Press journals continue to do well in the latest Impact Factor data
The Biochemical Journal and Biology of the Cell continue to maintain their excellent positions with an Impact Factor of 4.0 and 3.7 respectively. Biotechnology and Applied Biochemistry also remains steady with an Impact Factor of 1.2
While other Portland Press journals have seen an increase in their Impact Factors:
- Biochemical Society Transactions: Up to 3.4
- Bioscience Reports: Up to 3.1
- Clinical Science: Up to 3.9
Impact factors are a significant benchmark of a journal's value and these increases reinforce the significance of our journals in the cellular and molecular life sciences.
